​Building a Strong Mindset 

The ABCDE of Tang Soo Do as recited by Grandmaster S, Nar.


In the practice of Tang Soo Do, the foundational values we reinforce every class through the ABCDE principle represent a simple yet profound reflection of what it takes to grow as martial artists and as individuals. Each letter in this acronym stands for a core attribute that we should strive to cultivate in both our martial training and our daily lives: Always, Building, Confidence, Discipline, and Endurance. These qualities, taken together, form a framework for personal development, guiding us to strive for excellence and integrity.
A: Always
The word "Always" reminds us of the importance of consistency and commitment. In Tang Soo Do, progress is not achieved through sporadic effort but through a steadfast dedication to improvement. The principle of "Always" encourages us to show up, stay present, and continually invest in our growth. Whether we are practicing Hyungs, sparring, or working on self-discipline, the commitment to "always" push forward is the foundation of a strong mindset.
B: Building
"Building" emphasizes the continuous effort needed to construct and refine our skills, character, and resilience. Just as a structure requires a solid base and ongoing maintenance, so too does our personal growth. In martial arts, this involves not only mastering techniques but also developing respect, humility, and inner strength. The idea of "building" reminds us that success is a journey, requiring patience and persistence.
C: Confidence
Confidence is both a product of our efforts and a crucial tool for achieving success. In Tang Soo Do, confidence is developed through disciplined practice and the gradual mastery of challenges. This self-assurance extends beyond the dojang (training hall), empowering us to face life's obstacles with courage and a positive mindset. Confidence is not arrogance; it is the quiet belief in one's ability to overcome difficulties and achieve goals.
D: Discipline
Discipline is the cornerstone of Tang Soo Do and personal development. It is the ability to stay focused, adhere to routines, and resist distractions. In Tang Soo Do, discipline is evident in how we respect our instructors, our peers, and ourselves. Beyond the physical practice, discipline involves making choices that align with our long-term goals, even when faced with immediate temptations or hardships. It is through discipline that we maintain the drive to practice the other ABCDE principles.
E: Endurance
Endurance represents the mental and physical fortitude required to persist despite challenges. Whether it’s enduring the rigors of a long training session or facing difficulties in life, this principle teaches us the value of perseverance. As martial artists, endurance allows us to stay the course, push past limitations, and emerge stronger. It is the embodiment of the Tang Soo Do spirit, a commitment to never give up, no matter how tough the journey becomes.
Upholding the ABCDE
As students of Tang Soo Do, we have an obligation to uphold the ABCDE principle. This tool is simple yet deeply effective, providing us with a compass for personal and martial growth. By integrating "Always Building Confidence, Discipline, and Endurance" into our lives, we can strive not only to improve ourselves but also to inspire others. The ABCDE teaches us that true mastery begins within, shaping us into individuals who lead with strength, humility, and purpose.
In essence, the ABCDE principle is more than a mantra; it is a way of life. As we practice it consistently, we forge not just stronger Tang Soo Do skills but also a resilient, disciplined, and enduring mindset that will serve us well in all aspects of life.
